Graphic Design

My background as a practicing graphic designer goes back to my college years at the University of Dayton, where I earned a BFA in visual communication design and cut my teeth as the first Art Director of the student paper, Flyer News. I find it a helpful counterpart to my academic career: the two fields have different but complementary methods and skillsets.

I specialize in typography and print design, particularly multipage document layout for magazines and journals. I tend to work in a minimalist style, with clean, readable type and simple, striking composition. I believe in rational, unobtrusive design that sharpens and enhances the content without overshadowing it. One of my recent and most extensive projects was doing the design and art direction for pulsations: the journal of new african writing, which operates under the advisement of famed authors Maryse Conde and Patrice Nganang.

I enjoy the process-oriented approach of graphic design. It teaches a creative attitude towards problem solving, and imparts a fluency and precision in speaking about visual objects, that translate well to my academic pursuits. I also like the hands-on approach of design classes, which focus on doing projects and getting feedback, and I try to incorporate some of that into my lecture-based teaching.
